Hybrid types explained
Mild Hybrid (MHEV) — 48V system, can't drive on electric alone. Negligible MPG benefit (3-5%). Available on most new VAG and Ford cars. Don't pay a premium for it.
Full Hybrid (HEV) — Toyota / Honda / Kia self-charging. Can drive on electric at low speed for short distances. Real-world 50-55mpg on a Corolla. The sweet spot.
Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) — Larger battery, 30-40 mile EV range, charges from the mains. If you can plug in at home AND your commute is under 30 miles, PHEV is excellent. If not, you're carrying a heavy battery around for nothing.
Best used full hybrids £8k-£15k
2017-2020 Toyota Corolla / Auris Hybrid Estate — The default. Real-world 50-55mpg. Insurance group 12-16. Bombproof. £10-£14k.
2018-2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid — Larger family option. 40-45mpg real-world. Honda reliability. £14-£18k for high-mileage examples.
2019-2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid — Family SUV that doesn't drink fuel. 42-47mpg real-world. £18-£24k.
2018-2020 Lexus CT200h — Toyota Auris in a Lexus dress. Quieter, more refined, similar real-world economy. £11-£14k. Underrated buy.
Best used plug-in hybrids
2019-2021 Kia Niro PHEV — 28-mile real EV range. 7-year warranty (transferable). £13-£18k.

2020-2022 BMW 330e — The premium PHEV pick. 30+ EV miles, 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, executive interior. £24-£32k. Watch the high-voltage battery age (out of warranty at 8 years).
2020-2022 Volvo XC60 T6 Recharge — Family SUV PHEV. 35-mile EV range. £30-£40k.
2019-2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV — Once dominant, now dated. 28-mile EV range. £12-£18k. Reliability mixed.
Hybrid cars to avoid
Audi A3 e-tron (2015-2020) — Battery cooling system issues. Real EV range often 12-18 miles, way below advertised.
BMW i3 REx — Range-extender unreliable past 80k miles.
Vauxhall Ampera (2012-2015) — Discontinued. Parts will become difficult.
Early Prius Plus (2012-2014) — Sluggish, dated infotainment, smaller battery than later cars.

Hybrid vs petrol vs diesel — running cost
For a typical 12,000 mile/year UK driver, 4-year hold:
Toyota Corolla Hybrid: Fuel £1,460/yr × 4 = £5,840. Servicing £300/yr. Total fuel + service = £7,040.
VW Golf 1.5 TSI petrol: Fuel £1,690/yr × 4 = £6,760. Servicing £350/yr. Total = £8,160.
VW Golf 2.0 TDI diesel: Fuel £1,560/yr × 4 = £6,240. Servicing £450/yr (DPF, AdBlue). Total = £8,040.
Hybrid saves £1,000-£1,200 over 4 years vs equivalent ICE. Plus more reliable, less to maintain.
