Used Mercedes C-Class buying guide UK — W205 & W206

The C-Class is the UK's most-popular compact executive saloon. It rewards careful selection — a well-maintained W205 will outlast most cars on the road; a neglected one will drain your bank account through 7G-Tronic gearbox quirks and Adblue sensor failures. Here's what to check.

W205 (2014-2021) vs W206 (2021+)

W205 (2014-2021) — The car most UK buyers are looking at. £10k-£30k spread depending on engine, spec and mileage. Mid-life facelift (2018+) is significantly improved — better infotainment, less DPF aggro on diesels.

W206 (2021-present) — Current car. Mild-hybrid only, MBUX infotainment. £25k+ for a 2022. Diesel availability much reduced.

Most pragmatic UK buy is a 2019-2021 W205 facelift with 50-80k miles.

Common faults on the used C-Class

OM651 diesel (C220d, C250d) — Timing chain stretches on early units. Listen for rattle on cold start. Replacement is £2k+.

7G-Tronic Plus gearbox — Conductor plate failures past 80k miles. Symptom: limp mode, harsh shifts. £1.5-£2.5k fix.

Adblue tank sensor (diesels post-2015) — Common fault, £400-£600 fix.

Air suspension (where fitted) — Compressor failures common past 100k miles. £600+ to replace.

Bluetooth/MMI on W205 pre-facelift — Buggy. Updated in 2018 facelift.

Wishbones & control arms — Wear by 60-80k miles. Listen for clunks on rough roads.

Fair UK C-Class prices by year

What to check on a used C-Class

Cold-start the diesel — listen for 2-3 seconds of metallic chain rattle. Walk away if it's persistent.

Test the gearbox cold and warm — should be smooth in all modes. Any harsh shifting = conductor plate.

Check the Adblue level and warning lights — any indication of a fault = budget the £400-£600 fix.

Test every electrical feature — heated seats, parking sensors, COMAND/MBUX, blind spot. C-Class fault codes pile up.

Mercedes C-Class vs alternatives

vs BMW 3 Series — 3 Series is more engaging to drive; C-Class has the better interior at this price.

vs Audi A4 — A4 has the most refined interior; C-Class has more personality.

vs Jaguar XE — XE is a fraction of the price used but resale and reliability are worse.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Mercedes C-Class expensive to maintain?+
Independent specialist servicing keeps costs reasonable (£300-£500 a year for a 2018+ car). Main dealer servicing doubles that. Specialist mechanics for C-Class are widely available in the UK.
Which C-Class engine is best?+
For most: C220d (W205 facelift, 2018+). Sweet spot of performance and economy. Avoid early OM651 (pre-2015) due to chain issues. The C300e PHEV is appealing but the high-voltage battery is expensive to replace.
How long does a C-Class last?+
200k miles is achievable with diligent servicing. The W205 platform is robust but the supporting electronics age. Beyond 150k miles, expect £500-£1k a year on consumables.
What about AMG C-Class?+
C43 (W205) is the rational AMG — twin-turbo V6, sounds great, AMG body kit. C63 V8 is becoming a collector's item — prices firming. Both expensive to insure (group 47+) and tyre.
Diesel vs petrol C-Class?+
Diesel if 15k+ miles/year and motorway-heavy. Petrol C200 is fine for shorter commutes. Avoid the early diesels (pre-2017) unless DPF history is documented.
